Preschool 1 Literacy 1 Activity 02

Early childhood literacy is critical for five-year-olds as it lays the foundation for their future academic success and lifelong learning. Strong literacy skills—encompassing language, vocabulary, and an understanding of how print works—are directly linked to better school readiness, enhanced cognitive abilities, and higher levels of self-confidence. During these critical years, a child’s brain is rapidly developing, and exposure to a rich language environment through reading, conversation, and play builds the neural connections necessary for reading comprehension and sophisticated communication. Simply put, mastering these early skills prepares them not only to decode words but also to engage meaningfully with the world around them.

For five-year-olds, the appropriate concepts to master focus on phonological awareness and print knowledge. This includes: Letter Knowledge (Knowing the names and sounds of most letters), Phonological Awareness (Recognizing rhyming words, counting the number of syllables in a word, and identifying the beginning and ending sounds in simple words) and Print Awareness (Understanding the conventions of a book, such as knowing that print reads from left to right and top to bottom, that words are separated by spaces, and that letters form words). Five-year-olds should also be developing a growing vocabulary and the narrative skills to retell a simple story in sequence.
