Order 03

Children’s ability to correctly order a set of numbers is a foundational skill for developing strong number sense. Ordering numbers, whether ascending (least to greatest) or descending (greatest to least), requires a solid understanding of the stable order principle—that is, numbers always occur in the same fixed sequence (1, 2, 3, etc.).

Ordering numbers is directly connected to the larger numeracy skills curriculum as a prerequisite for most subsequent mathematical learning. It forms a key part of the Number sense and place value sub-elements in early education, setting the stage for success in arithmetic and beyond. For instance, successfully ordering numbers is essential for understanding place value, as the position of a digit determines its value (e.g., in 41, the ‘4’ represents more than the ‘1’). Furthermore, it underpins the ability to use a number line, which is critical for learning addition and subtraction by counting forwards or backwards. As such, the skill is not an isolated exercise but a core building block that supports a child’s entire mathematical journey.
